Oncologist Yavuz Dizdar comments on the latest palm oil discussions.
– It is not that different from the oils that we consume.
– There is a world market for fats and oils.
– Why do we use oils? It makes the products more appealing. It is mainly used to give a taste but it is also added for other purposes. You can customize the oil so that you can have your unique product.
– The only problem I see about palm oil is the plantations. Forests are replaced with plantations. But some organizations are trying to take it under control. There is a huge effort to make the production more sustainable, by also the industry players.
– Is palm oil harmful? No. As far as I’m concerned, it is not. It has been consumed for centuries. That particular cocoa spread is 50 years old and is many steps ahead among its kind. It has given its name to the category. I do not think that any of its ingredients has been changed.
– Researches conducted up until today do not exhibit any data about palm oil causing cancer. Therefore this looks more like a deliberate operation. Palm oil is a market worth 44 billion dollar. What is inappropriate here is the fact that they did on a particular brand.
– They feed rats with the product containing palm oil which is processed at 250°. And then they gather a council to discuss if it causes cancer or not. And they just decide that it does. EFSA, which I find quite questionable, has presented a report including palm oil and it does not impose any kind of sanction. Rat trials are not very reliable due to the different metabolisms of humans and rodents. So, I disagree with people saying that they keep their kids off of it.
– Many kinds of products on shelves contain palm oil; from make up to toothpaste. And we are talking about a 50-year-old brand here. It takes up the bigger portion of the market.
– It is basically a commercial move. The company has lead a bad crisis management. It was unnecessary for them to say “We are OK.”
